The 1960s Batman Tv series focuses on Bruce Wayne, a multi-billionaire living in crime capital Gotham City. Bruce Wayne is Batman a crime fighting super hero that uses only his wits and some improve gadgets and vehicles to combat criminals and bring them to justice. When Bruce was just a child he's parents were murdered in front of him, because of this Bruce trained himself to come to be tough sufficient to fight thugs and criminals. Along with Bruce is Dick Grayson a previous circus acrobat who became Batman's sidekick Robin, they acquire Gotham from bigtime criminals such as the Joker, Penguin, Scarecrow, the Riddler and Catwoman.

Batman (1960s Tv series)

The series debuted on January 12, 1966 and was marked for its high camp, and continues to be the version many associate with the Batman character despite it possibly being least representative of the many versions.

Despite the abhorrence of the Tv series by Batman's fans of the 1970s straight through the present day, the live-action Tv show was extraordinarily popular; at the height of its popularity, it was the only prime-time Tv show broadcast twice in one week as part of its quarterly schedule, airing on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

The hippie counterculture of the 1960s enjoyed the fact that even though they would finally win and put the bad guys in jail, Batman and Robin portrayed the soldiery of "law and order" as being woefully humorless, "square", and unaware of the fact that the world was laughing at them.

The series was produced in the United States of America and debuted at 7:30, Wednesday evening, January 12, 1966 on Abc television, at a time when other beloved Tv series included The Andy Griffith Show and The Wild Wild West. The Batman series set a approved that identifies it as a product of the 1960s. It was known for its silly high camp humour and continues to be the version some associate with the Batman character despite it being least reflective of the Batman mythos as it is known today. (The series was very reflective of the character as portrayed in comics in the late 1950s and early 1960s.)

Batman - Part Two

Review

Though the stories took on a more serious tone, this did very small to help the failing Batman books. Batman was in very real danger of cancellation by the time writer Frank Miller came along and wrote The Dark Knight Returns. The story, which features a future Batman advent out of retirement to take on Superman, the government and whatever else that dares to get in his way, featured a much darker Batman than before and the financial success of the comic inspired Dc to use the Frank Miller style of Batman in the ensuing years.

The darkness of the Frank Miller sway extended to Batman's supporting cast, as well. In 1988, the one-time campy Batman villain the Joker, shot Batgirl Barbara Gordon, crippling her. Also in 1988, Dc hosted their infamous 1-900 telephone poll where readers were able to call in and vote on whether or not Jason Todd survived an encounter with the Joker. While the validity and appropriateness of the phone poll is in dispute, Jason lost the poll and was killed on panel after a brutal beating with a crowbar and having a construction blown up around him.

Dc has since corrected the decision to kill Jason Todd by bringing him back to life. The Jason Todd that came back to life was a darker, angrier version of the character because he blames Batman for his death and is angry that Batman never bothered to "avenge" his death. Killing primarily villains, Jason Todd post-resurrection is best categorized as an anti-hero, and sometimes an outright villain, depending on the writer's whim.

The darker direction of Batman also made Batman a more insular hero. Batman was recast as an "urban legend," despite the decades of public service with the Justice League. Thanks to the characterization by Miller, the long-running friendship with Superman was shown to be a suspicious tolerance at best. The new Batman forbade any other heroes from operating in his city, even in times of great need.

The height of Batman's paranoia and darkness was reached when his superhero monitoring project Brother Eye project was stolen and used to kill and harm innocent people. After this incident, Batman took Dick Grayson and the current Robin, Tim Drake, on a cruise to bond and rethink things through.

As a result, the current direction of Batman seems to be a lighter one than in recent years. Batman recently adopted Tim and can be seen being chummy with Superman and Wonder Woman in the Justice League of America and Superman/Batman. At the same time, however, Dc is publishing All-Star Batman and Robin, an out of continuity tale written by Frank Miller where Batman is verbally and physically abusive to a young Dick Grayson. Thus, the two main archetypes of Batman comics are facilely available in the books currently being published.

The story of Batman's origin has gone relatively unchanged since his creation in 1939, most habitancy would be able to tell the tale of how a young boy witnessing his parents deaths went on to become 'The Caped Crusader', fighting for the idea of justice by utilizing fear against the criminals of Gotham City. Using his heritage to fund everything that makes Bruce Wayne the Batman has allowed him to fight crime at the level of superheroes without needing any actual super powers and this is what makes him so popular. The idea that whatever of us could go out and fight crime given the resources without relying on shooting fireballs out of our hands or needing some extra ring.

While this general story remains unchanged, Frank Miller manages to redefine the birth of Batman, creating something that seems familiar but much darker and grittier than before. This book aimed primarily at the more mature audience makes adults proud to be reading a comic book, taking us back to reading comic books as a child while redefining it into something new, something intriguing and exciting.

The thing that primarily sets Year One's story line aside from others is that it focuses as much on James Gordon as it does Bruce Wayne, interweaving their two different approaches to fighting the crime in the city. It also shows them both in new ways, not as the excellent cop and vigilante hero, but as two slightly flawed human beings striving for the same goal. It shows Bruce Wayne's struggle to convince James that he isn't the bad guy and James Gordon realisation that in order for him to achieve his own goal he will need the help of Batman.

The story written by Frank Miller offers something familiar but with new dimensions, development it seem best than before. The artwork is slightly more controversial, some readers are fans of the dated look to the story given that it was written in the 80's while others believe that the artwork in some places does not match the storyline. I for one think it is a small fault on an otherwise excellent book. Any fan of comics will agree hands down that this book is the greatest in detailing the origins of Batman and construction the foundations upon which all future stories can be told.

A must have for every fan of Batman especially those looking to start a range of comic books.
